You see this? This gets me every time I see it. Not because of the danger or adrenaline, not because “OMG why isn’t BAMF!Solider!John fighting back?!?!” not because it’s this huge dramatic scene where we see Sherlock and John in a new perspective. Yes, those are there, but what gets me, every single time, without fail, is the submission of John. He holds still, closes his eyes, and waits.John waits for death to come, for a bullet to the base of his Cerebral Cortex, straight through, out his Frontal Lobe, messy and instantaneous. But it also has a “here we go again” feeling, like this has happened before, and maybe this time it will turn out “properly” with a bang and a spray of blood. The exhale and closing of his eyes, I know Martin is just told to do it, but really? It makes him look so resigned to it. “Here we go, it’s finally going to happen. For all the lives I’ve taken, for all the death I’ve dealt, I’m going to die.” And it kills me, but it also gives John such humanity. Moffatt and Gatiss do such a good job humanizing these two characters, but John especially. That’s why this is such an amazing episode in my opinion.
